The Benefits of Composting

Turning waste into sustainable, high quality, usable compost.

Composting occurs in three distinct phases: the heating phase, the hot phase, and the cooling phase. The duration and intensity of each phase depend on the type of organic waste being composted and the method used.

During the heating phase, rare bacteria and fungi begin to break down easily digestible materials like sugars and proteins. These microorganisms thrive on the “delicacies” of the compost, causing the mixture to become acidic as the pH decreases. However, this acidity is temporary, and as the process continues, the pH levels gradually balance, bringing the finished compost close to neutral (around pH 7).

In a well-managed compost system, temperatures rise to around 30-50°C within a few days. At this stage, the initial decomposers are replaced by heat-tolerant bacteria and fungi, which feed on more complex nutrients. As these microorganisms work, the temperature can soar up to 85°C during the hot phase, which typically lasts just a few weeks.

High-quality compost created through this process delivers a wealth of benefits. It enhances soil structure, improves moisture retention, and provides plants with essential nutrients. Vegetables grown in compost-enriched soil are not only healthier but also more flavorful, while flowers thrive with more vibrant blooms and stronger performance. By using good compost, you can achieve better quality, better-tasting produce, and a garden full of flourishing plants.
